History of the pizza

In the 6th century BC, Persian soldiers serving under Darius the Great baked flatbreads with cheese and dates on top of their battle shields.


In Ancient Greece, citizens made a flat bread called plakous which was flavored with toppings like herbs, onion, cheese and garlic.

Poverty and hunger forced the people of Naples to add it to the dough and the first pizza similar to today's was created

During the 17th and 18th centuries it fed poor Neapolitan families, and was sold on open stalls.

Modern pizza began its rise in 1889 when Queen Margherita di Savoia visited Naples and asked the then most popular pizzaioli Raffaele Esposito to prepare her specialty.

Rafaele, who many call the father of pizza, designed a pizza stuffed with red tomatoes, fresh green basil and white mozzarella cheese that was associated with the Italian flag-"Pizza margherita"

In 1905, Gennaro Lombardi opened the first pizzeria in New York.

After World War II when American soldiers returned from Italy and coveted the taste of pizza that it became popular in both the US and Western European countries.
