School
He first attended a segregated school
For Aboriginal children, schooling was optional
The classroom environment was not good
He accepted an offer from an Anglican Priest and went to a hostel in Adelaide when he was 10
He went to a mainstream school in Adelaide Hills
He found it difficult at this school
He was often teased
His only consolation was the other children at the hostel and playing sport
He boxed, played soccer, Rugby League, Rugby Union, cricket, and Aussie Rules
He then went to Le Fevre Boys’ Technical School
He did poorly and was not intersested in school
At 15 he was asked to leave
At the same time, he was asked to leave the hostel
In 1961 he went to Sydney to get his VCE
After highschool he went to the University of Sydney
Early Life
Born June 16, 1936
Born in Alice Springs
Was kicked out and forced to move to Rainbow town
It was illegal for Aboriginal people to live in Alice Springs
Part of Northern Territories segregation policy
Rainbow town was a settlement for Aboriginal people outside Alice Springs
His father left when he was 2
Charles only met him once
Aboriginal Rights Campaigner
Met with the local Member of Parliament to talk about Aboriginal rights
He found it difficult to understand
This made him want to continue his education
When he graduated university his goal was to help the Aboriginal communities
He lead the Freedom Ride during university
The Freedom Ride was a cotributing factor to the referendum in 1967
He spoke about how Aboriginal people had to carry a pass with fingerprints and references from priests and police
Work
One of Charles' teacher suggested he work as a fitter and turner because he thought Charles wasn't very bright
He strongly disliked it, but still worked there
He did a 5 year apprenticeship and completed training
In this job, he was paid 3 pounds a week
Most of this money went to the boarding house he stayed in
During university he worked as a store stacker and council cleaner
Sport
Charles played soccer, which he discovered when he was 14
He played for Budapest while working as a fitter and turner
Budapest was the best team in South Australia
By 21 he was paid 8 pounds a week
He was one of the highest payed soccer players in Adelaide
He went to England to pursue soccer
He trained with Everton Club
He then played for Bishop Auckland
He was offered a position in the Croatia team in South Australia in 1960
He became captain of the team
While playing for the Croatia team, he continued his work as a fitter and turner
He became the vice captain of the South Australia team
He earned a good wage
He suffered from a kidney infection but was unable to pay
This was because of his bad budgeting skills
While completing his VCE he coached and was the captain of Pan Hellenic Soccer club
Work Post University
His first job after graduating was at the NSW Foundation for Aboriginal Affairs

He was often in trouble with the Canberra bureaucracy
This was becasue he was aggressive to people he thought were stupid or racist
After he was fired, he returned to Alice Springs
His career in Canberra ended when he was accused of theft and mismanagement
