Main Concepts

DNA
It is a double helical structure with a deoxyribose phosphate backbone. It contains 4 bases: Adenosine, Cytosine, Thymine and Guanine.
The base pair by Crick and Watson base pairing. Cahrgaff's rule: the number of A=T and the number of G=C.
DNA Replication
RNA
It's a single stranded nucleotide chain. Consist of a ribose sugar and hydorxyl group. Contains: A, G, C & U.
Messenger RNA: Encodes the sequence of amino acids. (mRNA)
Transfer RNA: Transfers amino acids to ribosomes during translation.
Ribosomal RNA: Makes up the ribosome that converts mRNA into proteins.

-
Translation: Using a codon table, which uses a 3-letter genetic code, you can look up for the amino acids that compose the protein. For instance AUG encodes Methionine. RNA=>Protein
Secondary Concepts
Cell Division

Meiosis
Parent sex-cell divides into 4 daughter gametes, each have 1/2 of the chromosomes of their parent.

What is it?
In this event, the pairs will be given 50 minutes to solve an exam about genetics, molecular biology and biotechnology. The pair with the highest score will win.
