Spinal cord - Coggle Diagram
Spinal cord
Extradural (epidural) space
Fatty matrix
Runs from foramen magnum to sacral hiatus
Internal to periosteum
Contains internal vertebral venous plexus
Venous drainage
Longitudinal channels on surface of spinal cord
No valves
Blood flows slowly in either direction
Internal vertebral venous plexus
Lies in extradural fat of extradural (epidural) space
External vertebral venous plexus
Drains medullary cavity of vertebral bodies
Connects to segmental veins (e.g. lumbar and azygos veins)
Arterial supply
3 longitudinal arteries
Branches of the subclavian artery
Lies on the surface of the spinal cord
2 paired posterior spinal arteries
Arise from vertebral arteries and posterior inferior cerebellar arteries
1 anterior spinal artery
Arises from vertebral arteries
Vertebral arteries ascending in neck via foramina transversaria of the cervical vertebrae
Give off branches approximately at the level of foramen magnum
Lies in anterior median fissure
Gives off sulcal arteries
Numerous segmental spinal arteries
Branches of the aorta
Enter vertebral canal via intervertebral foramina at every level
Give off segmental medulary arteries
Largest of these is the Great Anterior Segmental Medullary Artery of Adamkiewicz
Arteries in cervical region arise from vertebral arteries
Arteries in thoracic region arise from posterior intercostal arteries
Arteries in lumbar region arise from lumbar arteries
