Formative
Definition: Assessments that are used throughout a unit or course of study to monitor student progress so that teachers can adjust their instructional practices to meet the needs of their student
Exit tickets: Assessment tool that give teachers a way to assess how well students understand the material they are learning in class. Teachers can then use this data for adapting instruction to meet students' needs the very next day

Summative
Definition: Formal assessments used to measure what students have learned at the end of a defined period of instruction.
Final project: Present what was learned from the lesson by presenting to other students in the class.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Evaluations of student learning progress used to determine whether the students are on track to performing well on future assessments.
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA): The DRA helps teachers to identify students' independent reading level by assessing students' oral reading fluency and comprehension.
STAAR: The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, is a series of standardized tests used in Texas public primary and secondary schools to assess a student's achievements and knowledge learned in the grade level

Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction. It is primarily used to diagnose student difficulties and to guide lesson and curriculum planning
Running Records: Running Records: A running record is a method of assessing a child's reading level that is specific to the Reading Recovery approach to remedial reading instruction.

Performance Assessment
Definition: Performance: Performance assessment, is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.
Portfolios: A portfolio might include a student's "best pieces" and the student's evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of several pieces. The portfolio may also contain some "works in progress" that illustrate the improvements the student has made over time.
Open-ended or extended response exercises: Are questions or other prompts that require students to explore a topic orally or in writing.
