2.2 Explain why it is important to promote appropriate behaviour and respect for others
Promoting appropriate behaviour and respect for others = safety
Safety = security
Security = ability to learn more comfortably
Comfort = sense of belonging
Ability to learn = development of self esteem
Development of self esteem = self actualisation and achievement
PHYSIOLOGICAL & SAFETY
Respect learners by meeting their basic needs -
Keep learners fed and watered throughout. Let them know prior to bring their own lunch.
Pre course information for Forest School training would include kit needs, clothing, footwear information. Sending information prior to the course that learning outside can take place all weathers, helps learners process this information and prepare accordingly.
Make learners welcome with food and drink available. Put them at ease and help them get to know their new learning environment - outside and inside.
Lack of all these = likelihood that learners will feel unsettled and unsafe and less likely to learn
COURSE INDUCTION
Explaining to learners how the course will work -
On the first day of the training, get the learners settled in the indoor environment, to share all the housekeeping information, fire exits, toilets, break times, ground rules/agreements
A Forest School course handbook helps learners to feel acquainted with their new journey and will help them look back and revisit any information they will need or questions they might have.
SETTLING IN
Ice Breakers - using forest school based activities outdoors to help learners become acquainted with each other.
Getting to know the outdoor space, find a tree - get to know it, what do you notice.
Names - name games from the training I did , helps connect learners and builds strength in the group
A lack of providing a settling in time will mean the group doesn't connect as easily and takes longer for the environment to be wholesome and learning focused.
COMMUNICATION
is key to motivating learners, promoting respect, challenging behavioural issues and ensuring that a positive learning environment is maintained.
Verbal/Oral
Speak clearly and at a good pace.
Mannerisms are natural but be aware of them and if repetitive this can be distracting for the learner.
Inclusive language is very important as it helps keep the group together and continues the bond. 'We' , 'Lets all' "you can all'
Written
Handwriting needs to be clear and easy to read.
Created slides and information must be clear, consideration of grammar punctuation and spelling
Non verbal
Body language, facial expressions, eye contact are all key to showing you are listening
Appearance. Practically clothing needs to be fit for purpose outdoors, but make sure clothing isn't too scruffy or too dirty, but demonstrates professionalism and authenticity with forest school!
Listening
Eye contact and active listening helps learners feel acknowledged
Modelling good listening to learners, promotes it and helps learners understand and hear other learner's point of view.
Poor communication and lack of any of these will mean learners feel unacknowledged, will trust the trainer less and generally cause apathy and distrust
