Classroom Assessment and Stress
STRESS
is the body's automatic response to physical or mental demand, which results from the wear and tear of our mind and body, attempting to cope with various situations.
Eustress
is the mental result from pleasant events or conditions we experience. It is a curative or positive stress.
Distress
results from unpleasant events or conditions. It yields sufferance.
An assessment, which would be an
external stressor
, triggers anticipation of good or bad results.
In addition, if we have not been preparing well for the assessment all through the learning stage, an
internal stressor
, guilt resulting from carelessness will multiply the stress factor.
Assessments do not provide a number score as evaluations do. Throughout the learning process, assessment is taking place through samples and observations of students' skills, knowledge, and abilities.
ASSESSMENTS
are the measurements used to score, rank, or rate performance in learning. This may be through:
Abilities + Skills + Knowledge
Observations
Samples
Formative Assessment
Essays, Projects, Performances, Portfolios, Presentations, ...
Summative Assessments
Tests and Evaluations
When students are told that they are going to be assessed, they present stress, knowing of the mental and physical demand the assessment implies.
