The Nervous System
Central Nervous System (CNS) - Command Center
Brain
Thoughts
Memory & Speech
Movement
Functions of Organs
5 Senses
Spinal Cord
Relays messages from brain to different parts of the body.
Pass along messages from sensory receptors to the brain.
Coordinate reflexes that are managed by the spinal cord alone.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) - Connector
Somatic Nervous System - Voluntary Movements
Motor Neurons (Efferent)
Messages from CNS to Muscles & Glands
Directly control muscle movements.
"Efferent" - Conducted outward or away from something (such as from CNS to muscles).
Sensory Neurons (Afferent)
Messages from Sensory Glands to CNS
Converts external stimuli from organism's environment into internal electrical impulses.
"Afferent" - Conducting or conducted inward or towards something (like sensory glands towards CNS)
Autonomic Nervous System - Involuntary/Automatic Movements
Sympathetic Nervous System
Body's arousal (activation) system (heart rate, digestion, breathing, etc.)
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Body's calming system.
