basis of freud's theory
that psychological development
in childhood
takes place
in a series of fixed stages
that life was built
around tension and pleasure
. all tension was due to the build up of
libido (sexual energy)
and that all pleasure came from its discharge
* Libido
is the driving force behind behaviour
During developmental process,
particular points in the body is
sensitive to sexual, erotic stimulation
(erogenous zones)
In learning to control the sexual urges,
children learn right from wrong
& acquire socialisation skills.
In each stage the child learns to
overcome the conflict of
getting what they want
or being denied.
success at the stages = healthy personality. * issues are not resolved at the appropriate stage= fixation
Most people -successfully meet the challenge of each stage & move to the next
Some people - became fixated or obsessed
with that stage
-development was hindered.

3.phallic stage
3-7yrs
genitals
gratification:
masturbation
soon turning to:
gratification from
parents of opposite sex
-learns the difference in sexes
-are taught that what is
socially not acceptable
challange:
s. attraction towards mother
-fear the opposite sex parent
finding out
n would take away what they
love most-the genitals
child represses these feeling n
adopt the characteristics of the
same sex parent
resentment for same sex parent
boys dev- oedipus complex
girls dev- electra complex

4.latency period
7-11
put aside their
sexual desires
to pursue learning
-impulses are repressed-
sublimation
has little/no psychosexual development
-freud was fairly uninterested in it
-no conflict n o sociallization in this stage
superego is the personality development
that occurs
consequences:
-school,athletics,n same sex friendships
are the main focus
-things cool down with the battle with same sex parent
fixation
can occur if
-unsuccessfulness in completing
oedipus/electra complex
-or if ego fails to direct energy towards
socially acceptable activities
2.anal stage

never stated that all people reach
this point of full maturity
is more like an ideal stage
