Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome Type 2B (MEN2B, Mucosal Neuroma Syndrome)
Etiology: Caused by mutation of a protooncogene located on chromosome 10
Method of Transmission: Inherited or spontaneous new mutation
Characteristics: The individual has long arms with a tall slender body, thyroid problems, gland tumors, mucosal neuromas, Wide eyed expression, mandibular prognathism, malocclusion, and diastemata between maxillary central incisors; Mucosal meuromas can be found on the lips, tongue, and any other oral mucosal surface; lips may be puffy and protuberant because of multiple neuromas; Palate may be high arched and narrow; The tongue is the common place for multiple neuromas and macroglossia
Dental Implications: Early recognition helps to prevent thyroid cancer
Treatment and Prognosis: Prophylactic removal of thyroid, surgical removal of tumors and mucosal neuromas; Prognosis is good
