Maintenance
Types of maintenance
Predicitve
This is when engineers use data and previous knowledge to predict how much use a product will get and when it will fail. They then use this information to plan when the product will need to be maintained.
Preventative
Prevention can happen through regular maintenance to prevent something from happening. For example the chain on a bike will rust over time. To prevent this it must be oiled regularly.
Corrective
This is used to stop wear and tear or misalignment from getting to the point where it causes permanent damage. This could be tightening bolts so that they do not become too loose.
Improvement
This is when small or large adaptations are made to improve performance and extend the life of an engineered product or system. This could be swapping a component for a more robust one that won’t corrode (rust) as quickly.
Run to Failure
is a when something is literally run until it breaks. This is usually an item that won’t stop something from working properly and cause any major issues if it breaks.

Why is it needed
Maintenance is needed because ships and vehicles don't last very long without it. They become less and less effective until they are useless
