Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative Assessments monitor the learning process as it occurs and focuses on providing students with feedback on how they're doing as well as next steps. These are low stakes assessments that are focused on helping students improve. The data taken from these assessments are focused on modifying instruction to meet the student's needs.
Exit ticket: Students will answer one question at the end of the lesson summarizing what they have learned. Students must answer this question before they are dismissed from class. These questions can be either multiple choice or short answer. For the purpose of my lesson I have chosen a short answer response. Students will write in complete sentences to answer the question posed. The exit ticket will serve as a post assessment and will judge the effectiveness of the lesson.
Stop-n-Go: Students will label their paper in three sections. The first section will be stop in which students will write a response to what concept or ideas from the day's lesson they need more time to stop and think about. The second section will be n which will be caution where students will write about a concept or idea that is slowing them down. The third section stands for go and students will write about what they are taking off with from the day's lesson.
Summative
Definition:Summative Assessments are assessments given at the end of a unit of study to determine what students do and do not know in relation to content standards. These assessments are high stakes and do not have a feedback time period but instead measure what has been learned by the end of a particular time frame usually at the end of a unit.
End of Unit Projects: As another form of assessment projects help students display their mastery in multiple means and help them showcase what they know along with their creativity. An example of this would be at the end of a unit of study based on communities students pick a community from a different culture and build a model of that community. Students will need to take into account all of the attributes of a community and use this project as a way to show what they have learned through the course of the unit.
Final Exams: Students will take a comprehensive exam covering all the topics addressed during the semester. These test focus on the degree of student mastery on the content area at the end of the class.
Performance
Definition: These tests ask students to show what they know by performing a task rather than selecting an answer from a premade list.
Debate: Through debate, students learn how to pick a position and justify their position in a professional way that does not exhibit arguing. Students will be able to take a stand and explain their point of view which is a skill that will go far beyond the classroom.
Presentations: In a presentation, students must follow presentation etiquette in the way they enunciate words and the way they share the content with the audience. Presentation skills can be evaluated with a rubric so students are aware of the expectations set for them. This helps students build public speaking skills that they will need past their academic career.
Interim/Benchmark
STAAR Interim Testing: This is a computerized practice STAAR test. Students are to read the directions and follow the same procedures that they will on the day they will take the STARR exam. Similar to the NWEA Map test data on the student's current performance is collected to determine how well the student will perform on their end of year STAAR exam.
NWEA MAP Testing: is a computerized assessment given throughout the year that focuses on the content areas students will be tested on for the STAAR exam. The test presents information students have learned and some information that has not been covered yet to collect data in which teachers can analyze to predict how well students will perform on the STAAR.
Diagnostic
Running Record: A running record is a way to assess a student's current reading level. The teacher allows the student to read and analyzes different reading categories to determine what a student needs to work on.
Journal Entries: Before beginning a unit of study or a new concept in the classroom the teacher will write the new concept on the board. For example figurative language. Students will write in their journal for two minutes. Students will write everything they know or think they know about the topic. The teacher will use this information to adjust instruction to student's strengths and weaknesses.
