Formative Assessments
Formative assessments are used to monitor student learning to dictate instructional next steps or provide ongoing feedback.

Summative Assessments
Summative assessments are given at the end of an instructional unit or period to evaluate students understanding of what they've been taught during that instructional period.

Example: Project. At the end of a unit students have to complete a final project . A project is heavily weighted and graded and evaluates the product of student learning.
Performance Assessments
Performance assessments measure how well students apply their knowledge, skills, or abilities through a task.
Example: Portfolios. Portfolios are an example of a performance assessment because it includes items that students have created over a period of time.
Example: Projects. Projects require students to apply their learning while completing the assigned task.
Diagnostic Assessments
Diagnostic assessments are a form of a pre-test to determine how much students know about a topic before a unit begins.

Example: Pre-course test exam. Pre-course test exams are non-graded exams that determine pre-existing subject knowledge.
