The Fall of the USSR (P. 103), The End of the cold War: Ronald Reagan and…
-
The end of the cold war was brought about due to an increase in negotiations and trust in between the two sides (only one of several reasons)
-
Another problem for communism was Ronald Raegan who called Communism the 'evil empire' and wanted to end Communism instead of end the Cold war by de-escalating tensions
This can be seen through his Star Wars (Strategic Defense Initiative) program, which would have ended MAD - this would have led for the opportunity for the USA to leverage its superior nuclear power to act more aggressively against communism

'The Era of Stagnation' - a 20 year-long economic slow down in USSR during Leonid Brezhnev due to his stable position - so he did not innovate at all (led to political and economic stagnation) (the communist government was only effective when there was a threat while capitalism constantly innovates) this led to a big gap in between living standards which Gorbachev with gostriava made painfully obvious which led to discontempt.
Nuclear arms race was also draining the Russian economy this was worsened by Reagan, orbachev tried to deescalate this - 50% decrease but rejected
-
19th All union conference - Gorbachev extended the principle of multi candidate elections - abolishment of article 6 in march 1990 - local elections led to Communists losing power and Boris Yeltsin won the Moscow mayoral election. This led to increased nationalism which encouraged satellite states and Russians to go away from communism which was based on egalitarian principles.
