Without treatment, Thalassemia Major is typically fatal for children. The treatment for Thalassemia Major is frequent blood transfusions and antibiotics.
Two Types of Thalassemia

Beta
People with beta thalassemia have inherited 2 copies of the mutated gene. The child may have a mild form of the disease, which causes milder anemia that rarely requires transfusion.

This is a group of inherited diseases of the blood that affect a person's ability to produce hemoglobin, resulting in anemia.
100,000 babies worldwide are born with Thalassemia. Most common in people of Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Southern Asian and African ancestry.
Scientists are working to develop a gene therapy that may offer a cure. This involves inserting a normal beta globin gene into the patient's stem cells.
Another form of gene therapy would involve using drugs that reactivate the patient's genes that produce fetal hemoglobin
Prenatal testing can be done around the 11th week of pregnancy. This involves removing a tiny piece of the placenta. Or the amniocentesis can be tested around the 16th week.
