Sensorimotor
stage
Definition
The timestamp for this stage is from birth to approximately 2 years, and is a period of rapid cognitive growth.
During this period, infants develop an understanding of the world through trial and error, using the process of assimilation and accommodation.
Characteristics
It is how the child will understand the world through information taken in from senses and their actions on it.
The stage can be broken down into six additional sub-stages including simple reflexes, primary circular reactions, secondary circular reactions, coordination of reactions, tertiary circular reactions, and early symbolic thought.
1. Simple reflexes
- from birth to 1 month
- Babies reflex and have involuntary actions
2. Primary circular reactions
- from 1 to 4 months
- Babies repeat and perform actions unintentionally
4. Coordination of reactions
- from 8 to 12 months.
- Babies show signs of an ability to use their knowledge to reach a certain goal.
3. Secondary circular reactions
- from 4 to 8 months.
- Babies will repeat actions that they are familiar with and enjoy doing.
5. Tertiary circular reactions
- from 12 to 18 months.
- Babies uses objects to create new experiences.
6. Early symbolic thought
- from 18 to 24 months
- Babies are able to form mental representations of objects.

Preoperational
stage
Definition
The timestamp for this stage is from 2 to 7 years old. During this period, the child develops language and the use of mental symbols however they do not think logically yet(egocentric thinking)
Characteristics
Egocentrism
- Children have difficulty looking from other’s perspective
Animism
- Children have the ability to perform mental representation where they use gestures, image, word or an object that is not the actual thing to represent it
