Dental Implications: Should be assessed for cancer cells via biopsy when warranted. The dilemma for the clinician is often when to biopsy the lesion, as he or she may have some concerns but not enough to warrant a biopsy. Lesions should be guarded, watched carefully, or biopsied. When a cause cannot be determined or the clinician is concerned about the clinical characteristics, a referral for a biopsy should be made. Also, any lesion that does not subside after 2 weeks warrants a biopsy. Additionally, if some abnormality is detected when using the brush biopsy or other abnormal cell detection devices, a biopsy should be perfomed.
