Post Major Review supervisor meeting notes - 3rd June 2020
Yearly review coming up
Fill in spreadsheet and prepare mindmap/Gantt chart showing possible situations of access and how I could capitalise on those situations as they occur
What equipment do I need to use at Bournemouth? How could I access it? Do I need to use it in the labs or at the Roman Baths? How will this restrict my research activities?
Obviously trade off BU and Roman Baths
Must get in touch with Stephen/Susan/Zosia to understand developments in access at RB and working conditions, particularly detailed for completion of risk assessments sent to BU fieldwork control team
Prepare this as a comprehensive written document ahead of meeting for yearly review
Draft yearly review for next meeting
Writing style
Discussed Paul's feedback over referencing in documents and narrative of PhD chapters
Kate and Mark did not really comment on Paul's notes on references, so perhaps a feature of old writing style (i.e. pxrf chapter) more than current writing
They did note that the narrative element might be achieved by topping and tailing (i.e. relevant introductions and summaries of each chapter), and unclear if the internal content of the chapter might be improved in relation to narrative
Kate recommended finding relevant articles on academic writing by Hugh Kearns
Both Kate and Mark did say that my writing was already excellent, however, although everyone can always improve
To improve, just read more widely (probably academically but I also imagine literarily doesn't hurt either)
Development of narrative not something to worry about at present, rather when assembling more chapters together
Use of just pXRF on stone from Roman Baths
Explained reasoning why petrography and ICP techniques were discounted and both seemed happy
Kate noted that science is an iterative process, and that it is reasonable to provide samples which can be reanalysed in future using more precise or accurate techniques in later projects
Emma's comment on the preparation of alternate sampling strategies due to restricted site access
Discussed alternate sampling of ex-situ stone for Great Bath, temple precinct and reservoir if HE sampling permissions too slow
Must clarify what useful stone is available in RB stores to flesh out this alternate sampling strategy
Literature review progress
It's fine to get text to supervisors lacking geological maps, anything is better than nothing!
Finish clay exploitation section and get it to them asap
Comments on major review
Both supervisors happy
Change of term from region to hinterland also fine, even if region is more typically used in the discipline
Contact both Derek and Damian about progress of CRMs ASAP
Are saws in lab working yet? When will CRMs arrive? Has pXRF been sent out on maintenance?
Must email Stephen to say I passed with only a few comments
(not discussed but important) get rationale for sampling underway!
Few days off granted until next Wednesday, with supervisor meeting on Friday 12th June probably at 2pm
