Chapter 7
- Miss Lucy does a speech to the clones on the porch about their futures
"You were brought into this world for a purpose"
The noun "purpose" links to the idea of the clones as machines that are only allowed to do what their creator intended, reinforcing their lack of control and freedom within their own lives.
"You have to know who you are
The pronoun "who" indicates that Miss Lucy does not view the clones in the same way as society, but sees them as real people. However, this sentence clearly shows that they are different from herself.
"Each of you was created to do"
The verb "created" reminds the readers that the clones are different, and dehumanises them by presenting them as machines that only exist to assist humans. It also further represents how they have no control over their entire lives.
"What lies ahead of you"
This presents the donations as inevitable and shows how the clones' lives are following a set course. Their futures are already decided, and it cannot be changed.
"Your lives are set out for you"
This shows the lack of control the clones have over their future, as it has all been "set out" and planned for them. Their fate cannot be changed, and they will not have the opportunity to follow their own dreams
Chapter 6
- Miss Lucy talks to the clones about smoking and that it's worse for them
"We certainly knew...that we were different from our guardians"
Even at a young age the clones were aware that they were "special" and something was different about them.
"a long way down the line there were donations waiting for us"
The adjective "long" shows how they viewed donations as something that was happening in the future rather than something of importance at that point in time. This also shows that their entire fate had been decided by the looming donations even at a young age.
"You're...special"
The adjective "special" shows that the clones aren't the same, as well as how they won't live normal lives because of this speciality.
"Keeping yourselves very healthy inside, that's much more important for each of you"
This further hints at the donations in the future, as well as showing how their entire lives are affected by this.
"for you, all of you, it's much, much worse to smoke than it ever was for me"
The repetition of the pronoun "you" and the adjective "much" shows how Miss Lucy is trying to emphasise this point to the clones and demonstrate how they are different.
