GEOGRPAHY NOTES ONE:confetti_ball:
EROSION :hourglass:
destructive waves cuase erosion of costal landforms and are often associated with storm conditions
this process of erosion creates mant landforms
wave action, salt and abrasion break down the rock, over time it breaks down to sand and moves onto the beach
(weathering and erosion of cliffs)
DEPOSITION + TRANSPORTATION :roller_coaster:
(of sediment and sand broken down
.
Transportation process move sand and deposit sediment around the beach
a) deposition of sand by waves
b) longshore drift
c) aeolian transfer and deposition of sand
SAND CYCLCE :hourglass_flowing_sand:
Sand cycle
- a process that causes sand to be deposited, stored and removed on and from costal sand dunes and beaches
every beach has a sand budget - an ongoing process and is largely driven by weather
.
WAVES :wave::skin-tone-4:
constructive
: the swash is strong and the backwash is weak
long shore drift
: the swash is on an angle and the backwash is at 90 degrees
destructive
: the swash is weak and the backwash is strong
.
Swash is the water that is washed onto the beach when a wave breaks
Backwash is the water that runs back down the beach
(destructive waves have a powerful backwash than swash)
LONGSHORE DRIFT :file_folder:
movement of material along the coast by waves which approach at an angle, so the ‘swash’ occurs diagonally. As the water recedes back into the sea it drags the sand etc in the ‘backwash’ in a straight line
EXTRA POINTS :book:
The shore
- divided into the foreshore and the backshore.
The
costal environment
is the most dynamic (changeable) of all the global environments
Backshore
- landward of the high-tide shoreline. It is usually dry, being affected by waves only during storms. Some costal experts stat that the costal processes impact land up to 1km inland
The coast
- the point where the sea and the land meet. It is where the sea still impacts the land.
Foreshore
- area exposed when the tide is out (low tide) and submerged when the tide is in (high tide).
The
costal zone
main ecological services are:
to provide protection to in land areas from storms and large swells
to clean and purify water sad/plants do this
to provide a source of food, transport
Ports are situated in costal zones
AUSTRALIA :world_map:
Where do most people live in AUS? Along the (east + south) costal line (NSW,QLD,VIC)
seven states
85% of Australians live within 50km of the coast line
