The adjective "now" used within this sentence implies a sense of urgency, which hints at Ruth's impatient nature, as well as indicating that if Kathy does not go immediately her opportunity would be over, further representing Ruth's dominance
"Looked me up and down"
Ruth is a very bossy character, and this makes her seem as if she was assessing Kathy and whether she was good enough. This immediately gives a bad impression of Ruth as a friend due to her dominating nature and belief that she is better.

Chapter 7- Tommy asks for Kathy to tie a splint on his arm so that it doesn't 'unzip', as he doesn't trust anyone else
"I need someone to help, Kath."
The verb "need" presents Tommy as quite desperate, leading him to ask Kathy for help, which shows his faith in her as a friend and his reliance upon their friendship
