Naturalism;
Based on:
Uses a facts only aproach.
It is an outgrowth of relism and it responded to theories thought in the 19th Century.
It described the world sometimes with brutal realism.
Environment plays an important role.
Romantic illusions, feelings, and idealistic solutions for problems are absent in Naturalism.
It sometimes also aim at bettering the world with social reforms.
People are often caught within forces that are beyond their understanding.

Chopin's stories portrayed a mixture of languages and cultures in Louisiana-
It generaly deals with the lives of ordinary people.
Twain and Harte illustrated for the rough excitement for the "Wild West"
It has accurate descriptions of character´s activities and a realistic use of dialect.
It satisfied Americans need to know how other people in the country lived.
Used all elements of the local scenes to extend insights and observations.
It captured the socila atmosphere of the area that was being portrayed.
When talking about the "local color" it meant that its quality of background can't be found on other place.
Realism:
It contains:
Writers avoided the improbabilities of the Romantic tales.
"Realism is the kind of fiction that confines itself to the type of normal life"
Emphasized on the strange toward faithful rendering, a slice of life
The subject of Realism was often the middle and lower class people.
Reaction against Romanticism
Provided an outlet for writers democratic sympathies.
Finds drama and tension beneath the ordinary surface of life.
A realist writer is more objective than subjective.
