The Island
Initially beautiful and tranquil. Is destroyed simply by human presence (the scar), and later by human foolishness. This is a parallel to the Garden of Eden in the Bible which is also marred by human evil.

The loss of innocence
Ralph is initially pleased by the absence of adults on the island, but later he wishes they were there, "they'd meet and have tea and discuss / They wouldn't set fire to the island or lose-."
Ralph "wept for the loss of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy".
Motifs

Natural beauty.
Used to contrast the evil behavior of the boys with the nautral world around them. Golding repeatedly describes the weather, sounds and colours of the island in a positive light. These are destroyed by the boys' fires.
