A TEENAGE LIFESTYLE
WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS?
SELF ESTEEM/BODY IMAGE
-
Peer pressure - their peers telling them they should look a certain way
Pressure from society- society puts massive pressure on teenagers in order to be accepted they have to look like the latest women on the front page of a magazine- look a certain way
Some teenagers feel too fat, too skinny, too tall, too short, etc, most teenagers spend time wishing they were someone else
BULLYING
Millions of teenagers all across the globe live in fear of bullies, they are afraid to leave the house- most adults don't witness bullying so teenagers are left to cope alone
-
Cyber bullying
Constant- no escape (text messages, emails, voice recordings)
-
Bullying- often leads to depression NHS says "24% of 14-year-old girls in the UK report symptoms of depression"
Bullying- teenagers feel alone, restless, can't concentrate, unloved- studies say that "10% of bullied teenagers have tried to commit suicide" due to depression
DRUG AND ALCHOHOL USE
-
Prescription Drugs
-
Easy accessible- members of family/friends might have some- easier than getting drugs from the street/from a dealer
-
-
-
-
Most parents don't talk to their children about drugs- teens can be uneducated about drugs- they don't understand how harmful they can be and how easily you can get addicted- 6% of teens are reported to take Marijuana daily and believe it is harmless- Uneducated
Alcohol- Can be easier to access than drugs- parents have some? Cheaper than drugs- they don't have to spend a lot of time and money or put in much effort to get it- 33.2% of high school students say they have drank within the past month- Parents don't educate/talk to their teenager about drinking and the effect it can have on the body and mind.
OBESITY
-
Why is a solution needed ?-obese kids/teenagers are at a much greater risk of lifelong health problems, such as diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and heart disease. They also may struggle with body image issues or develop eating disorders
CYBER ADDICTIONS
Most teens spend a lot of time online, perhaps messaging a friend- a report shows that nearly 7 out of 10 teens have received personal messages from people they’ve never met- then around 3 in 10 teens said they would talk/chat with the person they don't know online, this can be extremely dangerous as the person online is probably not who they say they are and they probably want to meet up with the teenager
Why is a solution needed ? Being online for too long each day can lead to mental and physical disorders eg- lack of concentration- lack of sleep and depression. In addition if the teenager is talking to someone they don't know it could become dangerous- stranger danger?
Spending too much time online could lead to internet addiction disorder(IAD)- IAD can lead to conditions such as depression, obsessive thoughts, tremors, and other mental and physical problems
