Special Education Process @ APISP
Referral Process -
External
Step 1
External specialist conducts/facilitates consultation, observation and/or assessment
Step 2
After external evaluation is complete, parents are asked. to share the assessment results with the SST for further support of their child
Step 3
SST reconvenes to discuss the specialist's consultation/evaluation recommendations
Step 4
SST creates a new intervention plan that includes the external specialist's recommendations
Step 5
SST Coordinator shares pertinent information and strategies with relevant APIS staff (specialists, advisors, residential, TA's, etc...) and parents
Step 6
New intervention plan is implemented. Teacher(s) and intervention specialist monitor and provide feedback to the SST within 6-12 weeks
Step 7
SST, consultation and/or assessment notes are placed in student's file. Ongoing student information is kept by the teacher for annual review. SST coordinator keeps an active file for student progress monitoring
Student Support Team Process -
Internal
Step 1
SST member has an informal conversion with the concerned teacher to develop possible strategies and evidence collection process.
Step 2
Further help is needed - Teacher completes a Student Concern form and submits it to the SST Coordinator. Teacher/Advisor informally communicates the concern to the parents.
Learning Support Specialist schedules a classroom observation prior to SST meeting.
Step 3
SST meeting is arranged to generate next steps in providing support and set goals for the next review. Teacher begins collecting data following this meeting.
Learning Support Specialist continues collecting data.
Counselor begins collecting data.
Step 4
4-6 weeks after meeting, SST will reconvene to:
discuss the data
determine next steps (based on data presented) including parent involvement
Recommendations are effective
Student is progressing
No further action required
Step 5
If previous plan is not successful, SST reconvenes with parents, to develop new goals and strategies that include family involvement. New strategies are tracked for 4-6 weeks
Step 6
After 4-6 weeks, SST reconvenes to:
discuss the data
determine next steps (based on data presented) including parent involvement
new intervention plan is created if needed
determine if an internal or external assessment is needed
