Summary: A ship arrives with a solemn crew and two individuals, a man and a woman, who seek her help. They ask for Katharsis, basically a cleansing. She obliges and afterward the couple reveal themselves to be Jason, a prince, and Medea, the daughter of her brother Aeetes. Then they tell their story. Jason was to retrieve a golden fleece, but Aeetes who had the fleece told him to complete impossible tasks in return for it, so Medea aided Jason with her sorcery (though he largely refuses to admit that). After taking the Fleece, Aeetes pursued them so they killed his son, her brother and cut him into pieces so he would have to give him a proper burial. Medea also reveals, after putting Jason to sleep, the harsh reality of being Aeetes daughter: how he did not care for her but saw her as a threat because of her magic and how he tried to give her to Perses. Medea says that all will be well when Jason returns home, with her as his queen. Circe warns her that as a foreigner and a witch the outcome will be quite different, having also observed Jason's distaste towards Medea, and encourages her to stay with her. Medea rejects her and fires back that Circe is lonely and selfish, simply wanting company and storms off with Jason. Shortly thereafter, Aeetes arrives, and is angered to find that Circe let Medea go. Instead of being submissive this time, Circe stands up for herself.
