Etiology- Unknown origin, Autoimmune-relation suspected
Transmission- NA
Characteristics-One of the characteristics of lichen planus is Wickham striae, which appear as a lacy, white pattern that resembles the lichen-type moss that is often seen on rocks. Additionally, lesions associated with lichen planus are usually purple, pruritic, polygonal papules when on the skin surface. Although the color varies, lichen planus is usually described with these terms
Dental implications- Establishing a home regimen that works for the individual patient is important. Professional scaling and a prophy are essential in limiting the frequency of lesions . Home care products that cause minimal abrasion and have low amounts of flavoring agents are best for lichen planus lesions , and a soft -bristle brush is recommended. Maintenance appointments at regular intervals with as little disruption to the tissue as possible are important for patients with mucosal disease . Air polishers are not recommended , and scaling with hand instruments is necessary in those with highly erosive lesions
Treatment and prognosis- The usual medications that are prescribed include fluocinonide , betamethasone ( Diprolene) 0.05\% , and clobetasol propionate ( Temovate) 0.05\% . These corticosteroid medications have been found effective in the treatment of lichen planus.
