Notes on the Peace treaties of Versaille, What were the motives and aims…
-
-
War guilt clause was kinda true as ermany was the first to act on the Western front - making it a World War by bringing in Britaint through the invasion of Belium and invadin France unprovoked

The treaty of Versailles was not set in stone - most of the treaties were tweaked and especially in the case of the Versailles treaty the harsh aspects - like the reperations were reduced by the Dawes and Young Plan
all the disarmaments were meant to be temporary the time a disarmament conference would be hosted where the disarmament of other countries could be seen too, Hitler walked out
Versailles could not have predicted other factors that led to the rise of resentment - like US isolationism once Congress refused to sign the treaty
The great Depression of 1929 was also to blame for the increasing resentment and the hyperinflation and crumble of the German monetary system
Furthermore, The french were no necessarily going to declare war, they had signed an entente which did not necisate them to go to war - Germany forced their hand by invading them
-
What was the Dawes Plan?
Put into practice in 1924 - gave germany longer to pay, ermany was allowed to pay only what it was able to and arrange to give Germnay a £45 million loan to get its economy going - for 5 years it did work but then the Great Depression hit
Followed by the Young Plan of 1929 - allies reduced the total amount of reparations, and gave Germany until 1989 to pay (compared to 1984)
Basically have Britain and France who have been hit the worst by the war and just want revene - want to get out of this treaty as best as they possibly can. While, Woddrow Wilson is playing the long term gaime - sees this treaty as an opportunity to lead the world into a new era of prosperity and strong diplomatic relationships - thinks this will be achieved through the break down of Empires and free trade and Self determination.
France and Britain are both strongly against self-determination when it comes to their empires as would mean a decrease in living standards that would make Lloyd George and Clemenceaux very unpopular
Allies suffered more casualties than their enemies and most of the damage was done on French soil - should be repaid
The French desire for security is understandable as they had been invaded by Russia twice in the lifetime of clemenceaux
Can say that treaty had similarities with the treaty of Brest-Litovsk but not a valid comparison as the Russians had been completely invaded by the Germans where as the Germans only signed an armistice so technically never lost the war

In 1914 the government of Germany removed the requirment that currency nneded to be matched by gold reserves
