Definition
- Systematic collection of information
- To make effective training decisions
- Helps managers, employers etc make informed decisions on programs and methods
Purpose
- Determine whether a program is accomplishing its objectives
- Identify the strengths and weaknesses of T&D programs
- Decide who should participate in future T&D programs
- Identify which participants benefited the most from the program

Data Collection Methods
Structured Interview
ADVANTAGES
- Detailed responses
- Time for each interviewee is flexible
- Face validity
DISADVANTAGES
- Time-consuming
- Slowest way to obtain information
- Interviewee can distort facts
Observation
ADVANTAGES
- Clear picture gained
- Flexible in use of time
- Quality and credibility of information is enhanced when used with interviews
DISADVANTAGES
- Time-consuming
- May require skilled observer
- Job holder may behave in an uncharacteristic way
Questionnaire
ADVANTAGES
- Inexpensive to produce and administer
- Can be used with large numbers
- Standardized format for data collection
DISADVANTAGES
- Response rate not high
- Questions may be misunderstood by respondent
- Time-consuming to analyse information
Participation
ADVANTAGES
- Provides a feel for physical, social and psychological working conditions
- An experience of the difficulties aspects of the job
- Can be used with simple tasks within the job
DISADVANTAGES
- Experiences and feelings of job holder are not the same as those experienced by investigator
- Information collected may be incorrect
- May have an effect on job holders behaving in an uncharacteristic manner
Written Tests
ADVANTAGES
- Relatively low in cost
- Easy to administer
DISADVANTAGES
- Unsure of whether the test is truly related to job performance
