ADOPTION OF CHANGE THEORIES
DIFFUSION OF INNOVATION
Assumptions
an idea gains momentum and diffusses or spreads through a specific population or social system
a person must perceive the idea, behaviour or product as new or innovative for diffusion to be possible
adoption doesnt happen simultaneously in a system it is a process where some people are more apt to innovation than others
Stages of Adoption
awareness of the need to innovate
decision to adopt the innovation
initial use of the innovation to test it
continued use of the innovation
Factors influencing the adoption of an innovation
relative advantage
compatability
complexity
triability
observability
Adopter categories
innovators
early adopters
early majority
late majority
laggards
Limitations
it works better with adoption of behaviours rather than cessation of behaviours
it does not take into account an individual's resources/ social support to adopt the new behaviour (innovation) 3. it was not explicitly developed to apply to adoption of new behaviours
CONCERNS - BASED ADOPTION MODEL (CBAM)
Dimensions of CBAM
1. Stage of concern 2. Levels of use 3. Innovation configurations
Components of CBAM
principles of change
professional learning communities
change factor analysis
interventions
intervention mushrooms
Types of Concern
1. impact 2. task 3. self 4. unrelated
Stages of Concern
0. unconcerned 1. informational 2. personal 3. management 4. consequence 5. collaboration 6. refocusing
Assumptions
1. Change is a process not an event 2. individuals must be the focus if change is to be facilitated and institutions will not change until their members change 3. change process is an extremely personal experience and how it is perceived by the individual will strongly influence the outcome 4. individuals progress through different stages regarding their emotions and capabilities relating to the innovation 5. people responsible for the change process must work in an adaptive and systematic way where progress needs to be motivated constantly
CRITIQUE
success depends on participants and their commitment to change 2. very little documentation on process within action research 3. action research can be beyond the frames of CBAM action research training
