Epidemiology: found in immunocompromised patients and elderly
Pathogenesis: acute pseudomembranous candidiasis (thrush)
Characteristics: rubs off, common in areas consistently warm and moist, multiple, raised, whitish, cordlike plaques; pain, discomfort, burning, erythematous or bleeding base; inflammation
Dental: needs to be diagnosed and treated; carefully review patient's medical history for signs of undiagnosed systemic problems
Treatment and Prognosis: antifungal medications, nystatin oral suspension or clotrimazole troches; fluconazole
