Stretch Marks
90% of women develop by 3rd trimester
On breast and abdomen
Can itch - creams are recommended
Fades into skin colour post delivery
PUPPP
Rash along the stretch marks around the belly button
1 in 150 women
Spreads from abdomen to extremities within few days
Small , pink pimple like rash - develops to large, red plaque like area
Itchy during night - disturbs the sleep
Doesn't spread up beyond the breats
Rash will go away after one - two weeks of delivery
Obstetric Cholestasis
Liver problem - where alteration in the production of the bile
Symptom - Itching without rash
Inherited condition
Multiple pregnancy are at higher risk
Generally recovers post pregnancy
At risk in future - liver cancer
Breathlessness
Around 32 wk - 34 wk
Uterus starts putting pressure on diaphragm
Gestational Diabetes
Hormonal changes in the body make it difficult
t to use insulin effectively
Not dangerous to mother but problem to feteus
Macrosomia - excess growth of baby - difficulties while birth
Can be treated with lifestyle / dietary changes / medication
Goes away during postpartum period
At a greater risk to have diabetes in later life
Postterm Pregnancy
Pregnancy lasting longer than 42 weeks
Irregular menstruation - make it hard to predict ovulation
Not a problem to mother's health. But, risk to fetus
Placenta doesn't work well after 40 weeks - baby may not get enough nutrition
Oxygen supply is less so sudden death of fetus may happen
Meconium Aspiration Syndrome
Fetus inhaling the bowel it released
Can cause serious type of pneumonia, rarely causes death
Breech Presentation
Feet down instead of head
Some times sideways
Doctors may do external cephalic version
IUGR - Intrauterine Growth Restrictions
Baby doesn't grow properly in the uterus
Baby grows symmetrically or asymmetrically
Causes - Anemia / Severe malnutrition / severe diabetes
Placental Previa
Placenta blocks the opening of cervix
Symptom - bright red, painless, profuse vaginal bleeding
