Reasons for and Limitations of Fitness Testing
Limitations: Wrong Protocols in Fitness Test
Limitations: Reliability/Repeatability
Limitations: motivation
Limitation: May not measure/ predictions -> Inaccurate
Limitations: Competition
Limitations:Don't replicate movements
Limitations: Not sport specific
Reason: Variety of training
Reason: set goals
Reason: Motivational
Reason: Compare to averages
Reason: Interim Training requirement, things could change
Reason: Baseline testing
Reason:monitor improvement
Most Important Reason: Identify strengths and weaknesses
maximal( for most), core only, arm position, 90 degrees change
beep 1 -> horizontal , beep 2 -> vertical
not good for kickers , valid for lower back, stretch+hold minimum of 2 secs, record, remove shoes, feet against box, knees locked, palms must face down, hands on top of one another, maximal, running and turning prediction only
simple,cheap,lots of participants
prediction of vo2 max, compare to normative
clip board, cd player, cones, tape/casette
cdv endurance, prediction of vo2 max, warm up, Record level+ shuttle number, 20 m course, specific Cd, mp3 of official recording, must wait at end if early, 2 0r 3 misses before being called out
Components Of Fitness
speed - the maximum rate an individual is able to cover a distance or perform a movement in a period of time - tennis, pole vault, goalkeeper
Reaction time - the time taken to initiate a response to a stimulus - tennis, goalkeeper
Power - strength x speed - pole vault, tennis
coordination - the ability yo use different parts of the body together smoothly and efficiently - tennis, pole vault, goalkeeper
Balance - keeping the centre of mass above the base of support - pole vault, tennis
agility - the ability to change direction quickly whilst maintaining control - goalkeeper, tennis
Flexibility - the range of movement possible at a joint - pole vault
strength - the ability to overcome a resistance - goal keeper
muscular endurance - the ability of a muscle group to undergo repeated contractions without fatigue - Tennis
CV endurance - the ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles - marathon
Health and Fitness
physical benefit = lose weight, physical challenge, health (stronger bones, less chance of CHD, less chance of stroke) and fitness ( endurance, strength, flexibility
Mutual benefit = stress relief, increase self-esteem, increase confidence, feel good factor, self-realisation, aesthetic appreciation.
Social = make friends, different age groups, part of a team, learn the skill of cooperation
Health = a state of complete MENTAL, PHYSICAL and SOCIAL well being and not merely THE ABSENCE OF DISEASE or infirmity.
Fitness = the ability to MEET THE DEMANDS of our ENVIRONMENT. INDIVIDUAL
EXERCISE = a form of PHYSICAL ACTIVITY done to maintain or improve HEALTH and/or FITNESS it is not competitive sport
sedentary lifestyle --> decreased fitness --> decreased health
Regular exercise --> increased fitness --> increased health
VO2max
VO2max = maximum quantity of O2 that can be consumed in 1 minute
VO2max --> aerobic capacity or stamina, endurance
subtract amount of oxygen breathed out by amount of oxygen breathed in = total consumption of oxygen = direct gas analysis
O2 breathed in - O2 breathed out = VO2max
when you power anaerobically it is the zone of VO2max
