Strategy Guidelines on the Sustainability of EU aquaculture

Commission plans to adopt EU Guidelines for the Member States

Commission plans to adopt Sustainable Aquaculture Development Plans

Commission plans to promote the right kind of expenditure under the EMMF

Commission plans to set out “well-targeted support for the algae industry, as algae should become an important source of alternative protein for a sustainable food system and global food security”

Commission plans to help farmers and fishers to strengthen their position in the supply chain and to capture a fair share of the added value of sustainable production by encouraging the possibilities for cooperation within the common market organisations for fishery and aquaculture products.

The laws on animal welfare, including live transport and slaughter, will be reviewed by 2023.

The new EU Strategic Guidelines on Aquaculture will support this process.

The COM will also “consider options” for animal welfare labelling.

Target to reduce overall EU sales of antimicrobials for farmed animals and in aquaculture by 50% by 2030.

Target to increase the amount of EU farmland under organic farming by 25% by 2030 and a significant increase in organic aquaculture

A key area of research will relate to microbiome, food from the oceans, urban food systems, as well as increasing the availability and source of alternative proteins such as plant, microbial, marine and insect-based proteins and meat substitutes.

Trade policy – imported meat will have to abide by rules that prohibit the prophylactic use of antibiotics from 2022.

We need to be very alerted and involved in the process, who will be leading on setting the guidelines etc.(hepefully not just the industry

What is the timeline for this

How will the process look like

How can we influence it

What exactly does that mean?

What is the timeline for this

How can we influence it

Here come our analysis and recommendations about the EMFF that we are working on right now.

We should keep an eye on this and be supportive

How they plan to support it?

It might be an opportunity to eg. redirect subsidies from intensive aquaculture to algae farming

This might be a chance for us to ensure welfare is included as part of this

How do they plan to do that?

(Would be good if they could attach a percentage to aquaculture as well)

(Our chance to talk about algae farming, farming lower in the trophic chain etc.)

(Hopefully, this would include fish)

(We need to make sure we keep an eye on those and have the most influence by AAC, Public consultations and MEPs)

(We need to pressure that it will include fish)

(We should make sure that this includes fish)
