Although this is touristic affair and enterprise to create income for the local Maori community it is still an authentic experience. We were greeted and shown through the village by a young Maori woman whomgrew up here and still has relatives living in the village which is close to a river. Zehe are bubbling pools overall and one does come closer to the rear end of the big geysir which can be seen. But the most interesting things were the stories about everyday-life in the village, like cooking in the hot pools and on hot stones (you get the opportunity to buy some delicious corn on a stick), the communal baths (hot mineral water in abundance of course) as well as insights into the religious beliefs. The tour peaks with a Maori show with traditional songs and dances, really lovely presented, and of course a very impressive haka. The actors happily pose with everybody for pictures afterwards and there was genuine fun and laughter together. Just outside where you buy the entrance tickets, is a nice souvenir shop and a wall with pictures and explanations about Maori life and many sufferings of the indigenous people through the centuries but you also get a sense of the pride, the knowledge and the rituals of the people. Quite impressive and well worth the money, at least on our tour.
