TENSION: Became an HSI, once it made the SAT optional. Yet, in 2017 it was designated a state public research institution and in 2019 it was recognized a doctoral institution with high research activity
The school is a top degree producer for students of color, but those degrees don't necessarily seem to be in education.
"Serving" aspect problematic to African American caucus, since they serve Black students here, too. DD didn't seem to be as offended, saying that if the label guarantees resources that's only a good thing. She also cautioned against labels being a guarantee of anything.
JG feels like the school is more of a Hispanic enrolling institution, since they do not prioritize funding and programming for Hispanic Initiatives.

Teacher preparation programs and college overall are guided by progressive theories and preparing students to disrupt inequities and participate in democracy
Yet, JG and DD somewhat stray from U.S. based political issues in the classroom, but for different reasons.

Yet, MSU was named a "Voter Friendly" campus. Students are encouraged to vote, but not what a vote for certain things means.

TENSION: UDL and inclusion included in teaching program standards, yet not always fully taken up by the students (like in DP's interview).
