Pleomorphic Adenoma (Benign Mixed Tumor)
Etiology:
Proliferation of two different types of salivary gland cells, ductal and myoepithelial. Alterations in chromosomes also.

Characteristics:
Affects paraotid gland more often than any other salivary gland. Painless, slow growing, firm mass usually found in the lower superficial lobe of the parotid. Within the oral cavity, it appears as a firm nodular growth covered by intact mucosa, most often found in the palate, upper lip and buccal mucosa.
Dental Implications:
Difficult to remove completely, essential to monitor patient closely.
Treatment/Prognosis:
Complete surgical removal recommended. Excision can be a little complicated. Failure to adequately treat it can result in significant morbidity due to extensive growth.
