Pre-Assessment for Differentiation
Student Groupings
Top 5 Students: These students had played the G Major scale perfectly. They played all of the correct notes, always maintained an even and steady pulse, kept a very strong rhythmic integrity, and played the correct range.
These students will be expected to play the difficult version of Bach's
Minuet in G
, and perform the piece at a virtuoso level.
They will be expected to play in front of the class for their peers, as well as take part of the school's talent show night.

Middle 12 Students: These students had played the G Major scale at an adequate level. They made a few mistakes with playing the correct notes, sometimes kept an even and steady pulse, sometimes rushed or slowed down, and had some difficulties with playing the correct range.
These students will be given a choice of which piece to prepare, either the difficult version or easy version of Bach’s
Minuet in G.
Difficult Version:
Easy Version:
Progress Monitoring: All three groups will be monitored using a practice log sheet. They will be expected to practice for 30 minutes a day at home, and get it signed by their parents.
The top 5 students will play the difficult version of their piece privately to ensure that they are progressing towards a virtuoso level.
The middle 12 students will play either the easy or difficult version privately, but they will be monitored a little more than the top 5 students. They are not expected to play at a virtuoso level, but are expected to play at a higher level.
The lower 5 students will need to properly prepare the G Major scale. They will be monitored more frequently than the two other groups. They are expected to play at the performance level of their grade.
The ELL learners will play for me in private, and check whether they have any questions or confusions. To deliver my feedback, I will use a lot of simple verbal gestures and cues, rather than an elongated explanation.
The Special Needs learners will be monitored more intensively than all of the other struggling students. I will check the specific area they are struggling. I will provide them with additional support outside of classroom hours. They will be given support in one area at a time, and I will slowly demonstrate how to tackle each area. While doing so, I will ensure to provide them with continuous encouragement and positive reinforcement.
Heterogeneous Grouping:
The Middle 12 students will be placed in a group with the top 5 students. This will expose these students to a different perspective and method that can deepen their understanding of the topic.
The lower 5 students will be placed in a group with the middle 12 students. These students will pick up on the things that they might not have known about the technicalities of their instrument.
Lower 5 Students: These students had played the G Major scale at an inadequate level. They made a lot of mistakes with playing the correct notes, they never kept an even and steady pulse, they always rushed or slowed down, and had a lot of difficulties playing the correct range.
These students will not be given a piece to prepare, until they are properly able to play a G Major scale. Instead, they will be given a lot of assistance with improving their G Major scale.
They will practice their G Major scale at home with a video that visually represents their instrument, and that guides them step-by-step where to place their fingers. The video will provide the opportunity to play the scale at a very slow tempo, and at a normal tempo.

Using music games is an excellent way to support these types of students, and is a very easy and interactive way of learning musical scales. I will use a piano mat in the classroom, and clearly label the notes of the piano keys on the mat.
ELL Learners: These types of learners will be supported by using a lot of visual reinforcement. Such visuals will include a fingering chart of the recorder, videos that illustrate the recorder and where to put their fingers, pictures of musical terminologies, and so forth
Special Needs Learners:
Along with visual support, they will receive auditory support, while slowly playing along with a video that visually represents their instrument. They will use this video to support them with the G Major scale, as well as the easy version of Bach’s
Minuet in G
.
