The Periodic Table
Introduction
It´s a way of classifying the elements and is shown in order of their proton numbers, the elements show periodicity.
-
The rows are called periods, they explain the way the elements are.
-
-
Periods: rows
It tells you the number of electron shells in the atom. For example: in the elements of Period 4, the atoms have 4 electron shells.
Metals and non-metals
Non-metals are at the right, except hydrogen.
There are more metals than non metals, but they have different properties.
Hydrogen
It is always alone because it has one outer electron, and forms a positive ion.
-
-
Artificial elements
-
Most of them are in the lowest block, like neptunium.
-
-
-
-
Group 0: the noble gases
Contains the following elements: Helium, argon, krypton and xenon, which are non-metals.
-
-
Why are they unreactive?
Because they already have a stable outer shell with 8 electrons, except helium (2)
-
Uses of the noble gases
-
Helium: is used to fill balloons.
Argon: is used to provide an inert atmosphere, which means that they do not run the risk of being contaminated by reactive gases.
Neon: Is used in advertising signs, the colours change.
Krypton: is used in lasers, for example: for eye surgery.
Xenon: Provides light but with a blue tinge. It is used in lamps, lights for hospital, etc.
