Planes of movement - Coggle Diagram
Planes of movement
Sagittal axis & frontal plane
Sagittal axis
The sagittal axis passes horizontally (parallel to the ground) through the body front to back (back to belly button)
This axis is used for any movement where the limbs are being moved toward or away from the midline of the body. For example, a cartwheel
Frontal plane
The frontal plane (also known as the coronal plane) splits the front and back of the body. The frontal plane involves side to side movements (abduction or adduction)
Movements on a frontal plane take place on the sagittal axis
Vertical axis & transverse plane
Vertical axis
The vertical axis passes vertically (perpendicular to the ground) from the top of the body to the bottom
This axis is used for any movement that involves spinning. For example, a pirouette in ballet
Transverse plane
The transverse plane (also known as the horizontal plane) splits the top and bottom of the body. The transverse plane involves spinning movements (rotation)
Movements on a transverse plane take place around a vertical axis
Frontal axis & sagittal plane
Frontal axis
The frontal axis passes horizontally (parallel to the ground) from left to right
This axis is used for any movements that go forwards or backwards in a straight line. For example, a bicep curl
Sagittal axis
The sagittal axis splits the left and right side of the body. The sagittal plane involves forwards and backwards movements (flexion and extension)
Movements on a sagittal plane take place around a frontal axis
