why did the battle of the somme fail?
slow british communication
it would take ages for the british to get messages to eachother
it was not always a reliable service
some people couldn’t stick to the schedule but others got delayed so lots of regiments got left behind
they didn’t know which attacks had been successful and which hadn’t
they kept sending men over the top but the germans were sensible and didn’t do this
german intelligence
the german commanders were more effective
they were pre-prepared
they had good trenches and dugouts so they couldn’t be destroyed by the british
they had more experiences soldiers
heavy artillery bombardment faliure
it didn’t break the barbed wire
there were lots of dud shells
lots of the artillery was not fired at the right time
it was not as successful as it was supposed to be
the barbed wire just got more tangled up and spread around no mans land
it was a 7 day barrage before the battle began
the mines didn’t all work
trench warfare
Haig underestimated the trenches
he was using tactics from the Boer War
the German machine guns were very strong
they british had very inexperienced soldiers
they were used to fighting people who fought with sticks and fruit but this time they had big machine guns and artillery
they were using the same battle tactics as they used to fight these soldiers
