The process I will follow in my School to Identify and help a struggling student:

  1. AWARENESS

When I become aware of a student struggling in a class academically either through a teacher talking to me about a struggling student or me observing the student struggling. THE PROCESS IS:

  1. GAINING INFORMATION

An informational report needs to be written by the Classroom teacher on what her findings and observations are.

-Information needs to be gained from the teacher. What is the teacher observing? What are the struggles of the student? The what, when, where, and why of the student's struggles need to be gathered.
-What is written on the file about this specific student socially or academically?
-What was done in the past to support this student? What was successful and what did not help?
What is the advice of the parents on supporting this child?

All the teachers involved with this student needs to share their observations.

Parents need to be contacted and information gained on situations that changed at home or could be influencing the student. Are the parents aware of the student struggling?

GETTING PARENT SUPPORT ON BOARD

  1. A PLAN OF ACTION:

After all the information is gathered and the special needs teacher has observed this student in different class settings and has written a report A PLAN OF ACTION NEEDS TO BE PUT TOGETHER:

The parents

Specials teacher and Elementary Leader needs to meet and discuss the plan of action for this student.

As a team there needs to be a meeting. Which is the best way to support this student? What needs to be adjusted in his or her environment? Does this students needs one on one support in class etc.

The most important discussion is how this student is going to be helped

MAINTENANCE

  1. All the teachers involved are aware of their role in supporting this student.
  2. That the parents are informed on a regular basis on how the student is progressing.
  3. The Special Needs teacher needs to assess the student on a regular basis to see if there are progress and advancements. Follow up meetings or adjustments to the plan of action?

This is very important that a trust and work relationship needs to be established between the school and parent.

I am an Elementary Art Teacher at our School and in the Elementary Lead position. Often through my role as the Elementary Social Worker I become aware of a struggling student. I have been at our school for only 2 years and in the process of learning about the policies and referring processes at school.

My Involvment

  1. SPECIAL NEEDS TEACHER OBSERVATIONS

The Third Step in the process is to get the SPECIAL NEEDS TEACHER to come IN and observe the student and write an observational report.
