NERVOUS SYSTEM - Coggle Diagram
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Purpose
-Coordinates: all activities of the body
-Respond and adapt to changes both inside and out
Central Nervous System
2 major structures: brain and spinal cord
Brain: 6 main sections among other structures:
-Cerebrum
-Cerebellum: muscle coordinatioin, balance, posture, muscle tone
-Diencephalon: 2 structures:
Thalamus: directs sensory impulses to the Cerebrum
Hypothalamus: controls and regulates temperature, appetite, water, balance, sleep, blood vessel
-Midbrain: located below Cerebrum & responsible for eye and auditory reflexes
-Pons: located below midbrain & responsible for certain reflex actions
-Medulla Oblongata: located at the bottom of the brainstem & conennets to the spinal cord
Regulates: heart & blood vessels function, digestion, respiration, swallowing, coughing, sneezing, blood pressure
2 hemispheres: Left & Right
4 lobes: frontal, parietal, temporal, occiptal
Frontal: reasoning and thought
Parietal: Integrates sensory information
Temporal: Processes auditory information from the ears
Occipal: Processing visual information from the eyes
Spinal Cord: link between the brain and the rest of the body
4 regions:
-Cervical
-Thoracic
-Lumbar
-Spinal Nerves
Afferent: carries information from the body to the brain
Efferent: carries information from the brain to the body
Peripheral Nervous System
Smaller system:
-Somatic: responsible for carrying motor and sensory information
Afferent Sensory Neurons: conducting inward
Efferent Motor Neurons: conducting outward
-Automatic:
Sympathetic: defend yourself
Parasympathetic: back to normal
