Ramadan and the 5 pillars of Islam
Shahadah
The Shahadah is the Muslim faith.
The Shahadah states that there is only one God and that God is called Allah.
It also states that the prophet Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.
Salat
Muslims are expected to pray 5 times a day.
Wudu is a way to cleanse yourself before prayer.
You must wash your entire body before you start praying.
The first prayer of the day is called Fajr. This prayer is usually done at two thirty in the morning.
Muslims are supposed to pray in the direction of the Ka'bah.
Muslims believe that the Ka'bah is the house of God.
Muslims read passages from the Qur'an during prayer. The Qur'an is their sacred book and is said to have the words of God which was revealed to the prophet Muhammad.
Zuhr is the second prayer of the day and it is done during lunchtime.
Asr is the third prayer of the day and it is done around five thirty in the afternoon.
Maghrib is the fourth prayer and is done after sunset.
Isha is the final prayer of the day which is done at midnight.
During Ramadan, families go to the mosque to pray. instead of praying at home.
Zakat
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and it symbolizes giving money to the poor.
People who earn money have to donate one fourth of their money to the poor during Ramadan.
Children should save their pocket money for donation at the end of Ramadan.
Sawm
Sawm is the fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.
The first meal of the day is called Sehri or Suhoor. This meal is eaten before sunrise.
In Ramadan, Muslims are expected to not eat after sunrise or before sunset.
After sunset, Muslims eat a small meal consisting of dates and a glass of water.
The last meal of the day is called Iftar.
Iftar usually consists of the family's favorite food.
Fasting during the month of Ramadan is to help Muslims understand how it is to be poor and hungry.
Hajj
The Hajj is the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca during the month of Ramadan.
The Hajj also consists of Muslims visiting the places that the prophet visited.
