Also known as cognitive constructivism
Individuals construct their understanding of the world

Emphasis is on individual efforts of exploration
• Teacher’s role is to provide instructional materials and a supportive environment
• Student interests and choice drive the process of learning. -Internal drive/motivation is essential in learning
8.3 Social constructivism
Vygotsky
• Emphasizes the role of social context in knowledge construction.
• Learners share individual perspectives with others to construct understandings together that would not be possible to construct individually (or might take longer if done individually)
• Distributed cognition: Distribution of learning across many minds with the goal of drawing on multiple knowledge bases and ideas.
8.2 Individual constructivism in classroom
• Teacher presents a puzzling situation (a problem) and students solve the problem by gathering data and testing their hypothesis/ conclusions
