Past Continuous
We use the past continuous to talk about the past:
to show that something continued for some time:
Examples
Everyone was shouting.
My head was aching.
for something that happened before and after a specific time:
Examples
It was eight o'clock. I was writing a letter.
for something that happened again and again:
Examples
They were meeting secretly after school.
They were always quarrelling.
I was practising every day, three times a day.
for something which happened before and after another action:
Examples
The other day I was waiting for a bus when
he children were doing their homework when I got home.
with verbs which show change or growth:
Examples
My hair was going grey.
Her English was improving.
The children were growing up quickly.
The continuous past and the simple past help us show how two past actions or situations connect.
