All the substances around us have different shape, size & texture. Everything in universe is made of matter.
Change
Chemical Change - It is the change in which one or more substances are converted into one or more different substances
Physical Change - Those changes which involves transformation of state & doesn't change composition & chemical nature of the substance.
Classifications
Pure Substance
Compound: A compound is a substance which is made up of two or or more elements chemically combined with each other in a fixed ration.
Element : An element is the basic form of matter that can not be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reaction.
Non - Metals: Those elements which are soft, brittle & poor conductor of heat & electricity are called Non metals.
Metalloids: Those elements which resemble with metals as well as non metals. These are semi-conductors e.g. boron, silicon etc.
Metals: Those elements which are hard malleable & ductile & are good conductor of heat & electricity are called Metals
Impure Substance
Homogeneous Mixture: Mixture which has uniform composition e.g. copper sulphate dissolves in water forms Homogeneous mixture
True Solution:
- It is homogeneous
- The particles are very small i.e. less than 1nm
Heterogeneous Mixture: Mixture which does not have uniform composition e.g. Iron fillings and sulphar powder
Colloidal Solution
- It appears to be homogeneous but actually it is heterogeneous
- The size of particals ranges from 1 to 1000 nm
- The solute particals show Tyndall effect
Tyndall Effect - When a beam of light is passed through a colloidal solution placed in a dark place, its path becomes visible
Suspension
- It is heterogeneous
- The particals are larger than 1000 nm in diameter
- They do not show tyndall effect
