It is used to communicate the message of what was actually said in more concise manner
It is not just a different way of transcribing what was actually said

Difference between say and tell
Say something: He said he was going to join us
Tell somebody: He told me that he was going to join us
Questions
In direct speech for questions we inverse the subject and teh verb. But if the question has a yes or no answer then we use "if" or "whether"

yesterday = the day before
now = then
next week = thefollowing week
