PHYSICAL QUANTITIES AND MEASUREMENTS
Physical quantity - any physical property which can be measured using numbers
Fundamental quantities
length - distance between two points
S.I. unit is metre
measured using a metre ruler and measuring tape
Mass - quantity of matter contained in a body
measured using a beam balance, physical balance and an electronic balance
S.I. unit is kilogram(kg)
temperature - the degree of hotness or coldness
S.I. unit is kelvin(K)
measured by a thermometer
some other units are , Celsius(C) and Fahrenheit(f)
time - interval between occurrence of two events .
S.I. unit is seconds (S)
measured using a pendulum clock or stop watch
Electric current
S.I unit = ampere
Derived quantites
volume - the space occupied by an object
volume of regular shapes
cube = l x l x l
cuboid = l x b x h
cylinder = 22/7r2h
sphere = 4/3 22/7r2h
cone = 1/3 22/7 r2h
S.I. unit is cubic metre
amount of space occupied by object
measurement - comparison of unknown quantities with a known quantity of the same kind
magnitude - is the number of times the unit is contained within a quantity
