Physical Causes of Climate Change
Orbital change
Oval rotation - depends but usually further so temperature will be lower
Circular rotation - closer to the sun so temperature will be higher
Eccentricity - the Earth's orbit changes from circular to oval every 100,000 years
Sun spots
Sun spot cycles; Increases every 11 years then decreases
Dark spots on the sun caused by the flux (flowing in and out) of the concentration of magnetic fields
More spots - more heat produced
There are solar storms
Volcanic eruptions
When a volcano erupts, there is a large amount materials released into the atmosphere
Ash and sulfuric acid reflects the sun rays back
Opposed to heating, this is global cooling
Human Causes of Climate Change
Greenhouse effect
How is the Earth's temperature naturally regulated?
Sun rays travel to the Earth
As they reflect off the Earth, some escape to the atmosphere while some stays trapped
The atmosphere which as CO2 and other gases trap the sun rays in
Human activity such as driving releases lots of CO2 and other gases and that, in turns, traps more sunlight in. The atmosphere becomes thicker
The global temperature gets higher and higher
Human factors causing climate change
Cars and similar transport
Coal and gas power plants
Industry growth
Increase in standard of living
Farming
Livestock produces methane
Deforestation
No more trees to be carbon sinks
Basic info. of Climate Change
Evidence
Since 1880, the global temperature has increased by 0.8 degrees Celsius
However, the increase is not steady. It fluctuates instead
Measuring
Ice Cores
Ice sheets are made up of layers
The gases trapped inside can give us information of what the temperature is like
Drilling one ice core can give us 100,000 years of data
Tree Rings
As a tree grows a new ring inside the trunk is formed
These are thicker in warm and wet conditions
Can show us data 10,000 years back
Temperature records
Measured since 1850
Thermometers are used
Only short-term record
